More than 1,000 researchers and industry experts from over 40 countries with diverse backgrounds gathered for the World Engineering, Science and Technology Congress (ESTCON) 2018 held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. With the theme “Science, Technology & Humanities: Reinventing the Future”, ESTCON 2018 is one of the largest congresses in the world with ten simultaneously-held international conferences.

Each of the conferences focused on different issues pertaining to their respective themes. The aim of these conferences was to open up new frontiers, pioneer research, create new technology, and introduce innovative solutions and methods for industry.

Organised by Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Java Offshore participated in the two day-congress as one of the main sponsors of ICG, the International Conference on Geosciences. As the first congress of its kind, this years theme began with “Managing our Earth’s Resources to meet Future Challenges”.

Our EVP Operations, Dr. Bachir Ouzani, participated in the conference to elaborate on his paper “High Resolution Seismic and Hydrography Screening for Exploration” during which he interpreted the morphological features associated with active petroleum systems.

Over the course of two days, our colleagues came to support our booth at the ESTCON Exhibition, entertaining academics and students alike by explaining our seismic and geotechnical expertise – sharing with them how at Java Offshore, we put theory into action.

Not only did we showcase our services, it was also an opportunity to learn from the many keynote speakers. Particularly interesting was their take on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and disruptive technologies, the key components of the inevitable Industry 4.0 Revolution. AI makes it possible for machines to learn from experience, adjust to new inputs and perform human-like tasks, effectively reducing human error, but potentially leading to mass unemployment.

As research and investment in AI peaks, public engagement must also be encouraged to openly discuss its risks and benefits. It will be interesting to see how AI may impact our industry, as it begins transforming our lives in the coming decades.
